PREAMBLE

Man and woman are one with human society and Nature, are Nature. We know by the Principle of Le Chatelier (1850-1936), a kind of scientific confirmation of the ancient Law of Karma, that any action upon a closed system generates an identical and opposite reaction. Since Nature is a closed system, almost by definition because we call Nature everything in the universe, every human action upon Nature will affect humans;  it is an integrated and symbiotic system that always reacts. We also know that nature is endowed with incredible self-regeneration mechanisms, we see examples in the sea, earthquakes, the tails of lizards, the arms of starfish or our fallen nails that grow new again.

With other colleagues* at the ISO26000 group of LinkedIN we are trying to define CSR for the coming revision of the norm. Here is my contribution:

The 3 key concepts are: Needs, Rights and Values. They are related, but one cannot replace another.
"Needs" are what a human being requires in order to survive and preserve his or her dignity as a happy member of our species,
"Rights" are the minimum juridical measures to be taken by governments to care for the Needs.
"Values" are the internal principles of each individual that prompt him to care for other people's Needs and to proclaim Rights for them.

If the purpose in hand is to improve the next release of 26k then values should be there and specific government guidance as well. The Working Group circumvented values by referring to ILO and Human Rights Declaration, but that historically has been a common mistake; in 1995 everytime I mentioned human values in Spain people replied "do you mean human rights?". Now that confusion is no longer there:

ISO 26000 is non-certifiable in what seems to me a good decision by the ISO Comittee. A certification is a photograph of the state of the matter today, tomorrow things can go astray. A Guide shows a consistent path for improvement in SR with no incentive to lie, fake or make cosmetic changes to reach a certification.

Then, why should a company enter any kind of Social Responsibility process when there is so much pressure on profits, let alone on survival for many? Those are the practical motives that interest me, and I can enumerate a few:

We needed a projector for our presentations in India and we did the usual market research and negotiations. Our surprise came when the chosen supplier announced an extra discount to co-operate with our efforts to disseminate the Human Values in business environments.

Needless to say that we feel very indebted, not just for the good price, but especially for the warmth we feel in our hearts every time we see that we are not alone.

Carta abierta desde el zoológico

Queridos hermanos:

Ya casi es mi tiempo, y hay algunas cosas que por el bien de todos quiero y debo decir antes de partir. Y las digo por escrito, para que así se puedan recordar mejor, para que así nadie tenga el pretexto de poder decir que las olvidó.
